Bomber Squadron Guide: Units, Roles & Formations

In Bomb Farm, your bomber squadron is the core of all progression. Up to nine heroes can occupy the battlefield at once, each autonomously placing bombs and destroying minerals across a 19×16 grid. Understanding each unit's role, rarity, and skill set — and how to arrange your squadron for maximum efficiency — is the key to clearing all 600 stages across the game's five difficulty tiers.

Understanding Bomber Units

Every hero in Bomb Farm functions as a bomber unit that autonomously navigates rooms, places bombs, and shatters minerals without any direct player input. Heroes do not have a traditional health bar and cannot die — instead, they consume energy while active on the field. When a hero's energy reaches zero, they return to one of five recovery houses to recharge before deploying again. This energy-based rotation system means that managing your squadron is less about keeping units alive and more about ensuring continuous uptime across your roster.

Heroes are obtained exclusively through the Cage system, which operates on a timer-based unlock mechanic. Each hero belongs to one of six rarity tiers, ranging from Common up to Mythical. A hero's rarity directly determines how many of the game's 20 available skills they can learn, making higher-rarity units significantly more versatile in the field. Duplicate heroes are never wasted — they can be fused together to produce a unit of a higher rarity, which is one of the primary long-term progression paths for strengthening your squadron.

Hero Roles and Skills

While every hero places bombs, the 20 distinct hero skills create meaningful specialization within your squadron. Skills modify how a hero interacts with the battlefield — some boost raw bomb damage for faster mineral destruction, others improve the chance of generating chests, keys, or rare drops from shattered minerals. Since experience is awarded to the specific hero whose bomb destroyed a mineral, skill loadouts directly influence how quickly individual units level up and how much loot each run produces.

Rarity plays a decisive role in defining a hero's effectiveness. A Mythical-tier hero with access to a full complement of skills can fill multiple roles simultaneously, while Common-tier heroes are limited to fewer skills and serve more narrow functions. When building your roster, prioritize fusing duplicates to push your most-used heroes into higher rarity brackets. The number of skills a hero can equip scales with rarity, so even a modest rarity upgrade can unlock a new skill slot that transforms a unit's battlefield contribution.

Building Your Squadron: Slot Progression

The battlefield starts with just a single hero slot, meaning new players will begin with only one active bomber. Additional slots — up to a maximum of nine — are unlocked through the talent tree using gold. Since idle heroes generate absolutely no resources, unlocking new squad slots is one of the highest-priority early investments you can make. Every slot you open is another bomber producing gold, experience, chests, and keys with every mineral destroyed.

The 132-node talent tree is purchased with gold, and the early nodes that unlock squad slots offer the single largest boost to your overall income. Spend gold early and often on these nodes rather than hoarding it. Combined with forging equipment to +8 (which has a guaranteed success rate), expanding your active squad size is the foundation of an efficient start. A full nine-hero squadron clearing minerals simultaneously will vastly outpace any amount of stat investment on a single unit.

Optimal Formation Strategies

Because Bomb Farm is an idle game where heroes self-position and self-target, formation strategy is less about physical placement and more about squad composition. The goal is to maximize the rate at which minerals are destroyed across the 19×16 room grid. A well-composed squadron balances high-damage bombers who shatter tough, rare minerals quickly with support-oriented heroes whose skills increase drop rates for chests, keys, and gems. Since rarer minerals have more health but yield better rewards, dedicating at least a few slots to your strongest damage-dealers ensures these high-value targets are cleared efficiently.

For early and mid-game progression, fill every available slot with whatever heroes you have — an active Common hero always outperforms a benched Rare one. As your roster matures through fusing and star-level upgrades via gem rituals, you can become more selective. In later stages and higher difficulties, consider rotating heroes with complementary skill sets. Heroes focused on the Lucky stat will boost chest, key, gem, and time-part drop rates without affecting gold income, while pure damage heroes accelerate room-clear speed. Balancing these two priorities is the core of late-game squadron optimization.

Energy Management and Rotation

A full squadron of nine heroes will cycle through energy at varying rates depending on their gear, star level, and the difficulty of the current stage. The five recovery houses each have their own restoration speed, creating a natural rotation where depleted heroes rest while fresh ones take the field. Upgrading your houses through the progression system reduces downtime and keeps more bombers active at any given moment, which directly translates to higher resource output.

Smart rotation also affects experience distribution. Since experience from a destroyed mineral goes exclusively to the hero whose bomb dealt the finishing blow, players looking to level up a specific hero can temporarily reduce their active squad size to funnel more minerals toward that unit. This is particularly useful when preparing a newly fused high-rarity hero for tougher content. However, for general farming — especially when re-running earlier stages where drop rates and rewards remain consistent regardless of how many times you revisit them — a full nine-hero squad is almost always the most efficient approach.
